Fantasy Football and the LFC

I’m ready to draft my championship fantasy football team’s next week. One of the greatest things about having the NFL end their lock out is now we can have fantasy football. I have done fantasy football for years and one year a friend of mine and myself were commissioners our own own league. We didn’t do it on the computer but we did it on paper and had a live draft with tons of food. Jerald did a great job doing the statistics each week and it was a great season because if I remember right, I won.

Ever since those days we have switched over to Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football and still have our own league of college friends and some of those who was with us than are still with us today. I enjoy taking the time to rank the top 25 players in each position except for defense we only pick the team and not defensive players. This Monday night is my first draft and I’m so ready to get it started.
I have just started researching the players, reading fantasy football advice, and watching pre-season football has helped too. Now I wait and find out what pick I have in the draft and what strategy I will plan. My top 5 QB’s are: Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Josh Freeman, and Vick. My top 5 RB’s are: Johnson, Foster, Peterson, Rice, and McFadden (ok I’m a Raiders fan). My top 5 WR’s are: A. Johnson, Wallace, Nicks, Bryant, and C.Johnson. My top 5 TE’s are: Whitten, Clark, Davis, Miller and Lewis.
As much as I am excited about getting my team together and hopefully winning the Championship, I’m more excited about the group that I get to be a part of next week.
It’s not a fantasy football league but it is more importantly a family, a community, a campus ministry group called the Lions For Christ at Texas A&M-Commerce. I’m very excited to see the returning students and really excited to meet new students. We don’t do a draft and just pick who we want on our team, everyone is welcome to be a part of this winning team. The only reason we are a winning team is because of who are Coach and Quarterback is: God is our coach and Jesus is our Quarterback. Paul wrote to the Cornith church in 2 Corinthians 2:14-16, “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?” Jesus leads us in a triumphal procession as our Quarterback, our leader, and our redeemer. He took our place on the cross.

Campus Ministry is like forming a team who cares about each other, who loves each other, who support one another and who smell like Jesus. We don’t rank people by their abilities, everyone is on the same line and can bring so much to the overall mission of the group which is to share the life-changing message to this campus. We are a team who help each other up when one gets tackled, to share with each other the victory we have in Christ, to have fun together, to keep accountable to one another and to help each other win the ultimate championship-The Crown of Life and a Home in Heaven. As in fantasy football, everyone is important to the team and everyone has their own job and own ability. Paul writes about  that in Romans 12:4-8, ” For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.  Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”  At the LFC we are all part of the team but have different gifts that we can bring to the group just like a kicker brings to his team. Every NFL team is always looking for a great kicker, so that when they can’t score touchdowns they will be able to score field goals. That’s the same about being a part of a campus group, we need a kicker, a wide receiver, running back, an encourager, a leader, a servant, a teacher, a giver, a forgiver, a peacemaker, a quiet heart, a passionate heart, a goof ball, and etc.

We have a great group of students who are so passionate about serving God and living lives that God has called us to live. Yes I’m excited and ready to draft my fantasy team but I’m ready to build the LFC as a team that follows the one and true leader, JESUS and spends time paying attention and acknowledging our coach, GOD. I can’t wait to see the returning students and see how much they have grown spiritually and I’m excited to meet new students who will help our team grow. Our fantasy football draft is just like the title, a Fantasy but the LFC is real and Campus Ministry is so important in the world we live in today.
