A Fresh Start

As the NFL season is now underway and the Preseason games are just around the corner there are many players who are getting a fresh start with a new team or with a new coach. One of those players is Colt McCoy, the Quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, who was drafted last year even with opposition form Ex Coach Eric Mangini. After Mike Holmgren, the Browns President, strongly suggested to have his team draft McCoy in the third round last year, Mangini gave Colt the silent treatment.

When McCoy came ready to work last spring, his coaches hardly spoke to him. He was even given the weekly game plan two days after the other quarterbacks got theirs. It was like he didn’t exist at all. McCoy himself won’t talk much about the past and what happened because of his faith and because he is a coaches son and is respectful. A positive note is last year because of injuries to Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, forced Mangini to play Colt for eight games last year. In those eight games gave hints of a promising young Quarterback to once again bring Football back to its prominence in Cleveland. No more LeBron James, Hello Colt McCoy. Communication last year was sometimes non-existent with his coaches. For instance, he McCoy didn’t learn till 5 minutes before the final exhibition game he was going to start. He had no reps, the team hardly knew him and he went in there in three 13 for 13 passes.

This year Colt has a fresh start with a new coach by his side encouraging him to have a healthy respect for last year and than move on.That Coach is Pat Shurmur, who last year was the Rams offensive coordinator managing Sam Bradford’s transition to the NFL. Now in his prime, he has been given McCoy with the mandate of building him to like he built Don0van McNabb and Bradford. Pat runs the Bill Walsh version of the West Coast offense that Holmgren enjoys. Now he has the opportunity to give Colt McCoy a fresh start and turn him into an NFL star.

Now with a fresh start and a winning attitude McCoy can bring to Cleveland want they have been missing for several years, a winning team. McCoy said in an interview, “It’s easy to say this is one of those teams that fans will support if it plays well,” McCoy said. “We’ve got to win. We’ve got to find a way.” Last Saturday alone 11,000 fans came to the stadium downtown simply to watch a open practice.

Fresh starts, we all need one. Our lives get so out of focus and sometimes off track that we need a fresh start. Isn’t that what repentance is all about? Peter writes in 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” God doesn’t want us to perish but wants us all to repent, to get a fresh start. Repentance really means to be convicted enough that we are willing to change our lives and turn to God who will refresh our spirits if we genuinely repent. Isaiah writes in Isaiah 43:18,19:

 “Remember not the former things,
   nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I am doing a new thing;
   now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
    and rivers in the desert.”

To make a fresh start we need to do what Coach Shurmur told Colt, to have a healthy respect of our past but move on. So we need to first stop making excuses for past failures. Secondly, we need take an inventory of who is on your team. The scriptures say that Bad company corrupts good morals. Thirdly, is to act in faith as did Joshua and the Israelite’s as they marched around Jericho for 7 days just blowing horns and than on the seventh time on the seventh day, they shouted and the walls came tumbling down.   As we act in faith, to really start fresh we need to transform our lives by renewing our minds. After we renew our thoughts and clear our minds than we need to depend on God for everything. Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” As Colt McCoy has a fresh start in Cleveland this year, are you ready for a fresh start in your life? God is always here waiting for you to come back home, just like the prodigal son, and to start fresh again. If you have never accepted Jesus as your Lord and Master and been baptized, today you can do that. God accepts you for who you are and loves you so much. If you are a Christian and have fallen away or got off track, its time to repent and start fresh again. God is waiting with open arms.

I hope Colt McCoy has a successful NFL career and this fresh start is what he needs to do that. I also know he is a brother in Christ and his faith in God is what keeps him going in the right direction.
