A follow up to the John Beck story that I wrote a few days ago. Are you still trying to figure out who John Beck is? Remember he is not my friend I had back in College but he is the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins. After the endorsement of his head coach Mike Shanahan, the dismissal of Donovan McNabb, and the free agency pick up of Rex Grossman, gave hope to John, who is nearly 30, with all losing starts and 60 thrown NFL passes to his name to be the next starting Quarterback.
Since not starting a game since 2007, John burns with confidence, he is relentless, and even flew from San Diego to D.C. several times just to throw passes to his receivers. John even sent out packages loaded with photocopies of plays from the team’s playbook to receivers Leonard Hankerson and Niles Paul. John is very confidence and said in an interview with Yahoo Sports, “Even when it didn’t work out in Miami, I believed in myself. I believed in my work ethic. I think if you just believe enough, recognition is going to happen.” Beck said he has to keep his mind right and he lives by his advice by pushing, walking the starters strut, directing players, and pulling together meetings despite being the No. 3 Quarterback on last years squad. Beck is surely acting the part of a starting Quarterback by all of this.
We are called to not just act the part but be the part. Christianity is not a game we play or act our part, it is a lifestyle. It is who we are, how we live, and not just what we do. We can’t just go through the motions and put on our spiritual uniform when we want to. Paul wrote to the Corinth church in 2 Corinthians 13:5 and told them, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” We need to examine our spiritual lives and look deep into our hearts and ask ourselves are we living the life God has called us to live? We need to take off our masks and quit acting like a Christian but start being a Christian.
John Beck is right now acting the part of a NFL Quarterback
but when the season kicks off, he will be the starting Quarterback of the Washington Redskins.
