Lock Out with Love

Is the NFL season going to happen this season? Will there even be a NFL this season? Will the preseason even happen? How about training camps? The question that is really important to me is, Where there be Fantasy Football this year?

These questions and more should be answered hopefully soon. This week alone the labor committee and the NFLPA have been meeting discussing all the core issues that remain unresolved. For nearly two months high league executives pointed to today as when the NFL needed to reach this collective bargaining agreement. Will it happen today? Will both sides come to an agreement and the NFL will start training camp and the Aug 7 Hall of Fame game will be played? The momentum is happening as I write this article, both sides have agreed upon the big money issues but still have to work out the fairness issues. So hopefully by July 21 when the owners meet we will be able to hear the words: “Let’s play some football.”

It is so interesting to compare all this to our walk with Christ. We are called to treat others the way we want to be treated, we are called to bear with one another’s burdens and we are called to forgive others as God has forgiven us.

Jesus teaches us a great lesson in the Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 5:38-42: ” 38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,[a] let him have your cloak as well.41And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.”

If only the NFL and the NFLPA would work out things the way God wants us too, training camp would have started months ago and I wouldn’t have to write this article. The lesson we can take out from all of this is that life isn’t all about money, it’s really about how we treat one another and how we love one another as God has loved us. I encourage you to make a difference in this world by being a world changer. Turn your cheek, give your cloak, go the extra mile and live the golden rule.

If more people would heed the above lesson, we’d all be better off. It can get rather discouraging to keep on giving and giving and treating others the right way only to get trampled on in return. I suppose the hardship is not in the actual generosity, but persevering in the endeavor with such little positive feedback (maybe a little thanks instead of using it as an opportunity to take advantage). At least that is the obstacle for me. However, we don’t do it for the earthly rewards, but because we are called to emulate our Father. Therefore, I continue to persist…regardless of the outcome. 🙂

  2. Ricky Keeler says:

    Amen Hilary

John and myself will pray that you keep persisting towards that goal. We need to emulate our Father as you said and just keep running the race while striving together for the Gospel. We have a whole Kingdom awaiting in heaven, where the rewards are much greater there than on Earth .
